Children’s Dental

Ideally, children should first visit the dentist after their first birthday, or 6 months after their teeth first erupt- whichever comes first.

This is a great way to form a healthy relationship with your dentist, and to check for issues such as baby bottle tooth decay. This can be done during your regular check-up, and routine check-ups for your child should follow every six months.

Information on the Child Dental Benefit Schedule

Patient Eligibility

From January 2014 Medicare has implemented a new dental schedule to replace the old Teen Dental Vouchers. Eligible families, teenagers and approved care organisations will receive a letter to confirm eligibility for this scheme.

A child is eligible if:

  • They are aged 2 – 17 years for at least one day of the calendar year
  • And they are entitled to Medicare

If a parent or carer is unsure whether their child is eligible please contact our dental practice on (03) 5988 8745 and we can make the appropriate enquiries for you. A child’s eligibility is assessed regularly through Medicare and may not be eligible for the full duration of the 2 years.

Services that receive benefits include:

  • Examinations
  • X-rays
  • Cleaning
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Fissure sealants
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatments
  • Extractions

Claiming restrictions apply. The benefit is $1000 per child and may be claimed within 2 years.
